Being stopped by the police while driving

Alcohol measurement

The police can stop you at any time and ask you to blow into a breathalyzer if:

  • they believe you have been drinking alcohol

  • you have committed a traffic violation

  • you have been in a traffic accident

If a person refuses to blow

If a person refuses to blow into a breathalyzer when requested by the police, it is considered a violation of the traffic laws. The police can then:

  • assume that the person is under the influence and treat the case as such

  • require a blood sample

  • arrest the person if necessary and take them to a police station for a blood sample

The person could also lose their driving license or be fined.
