Being stopped by the police while driving

Police may stop a car for any reason. If the police asks you to stop your car, do so when it is safe.

If you don't stop the car you are breaking the law.

If everything is okay, this usually only takes a few minutes.

In general

Police may stop vehicles in order to:

  • check driver's license

  • check registration and insurance of the vehicle

  • assess the driver's condition

  • perform safety checks, for example on lights or belts
