Being stopped by the police while driving
Police may stop a car for any reason. If the police asks you to stop your car, do so when it is safe.
If you don't stop the car you are breaking the law.
If everything is okay, this usually only takes a few minutes.
In general
Police may stop vehicles in order to:
check driver's license
check registration and insurance of the vehicle
assess the driver's condition
perform safety checks, for example on lights or belts
Driver's responsibilities
Drivers have to:
park the car as police indicate
show a driver's license
follow police orders
Police have the authority to arrest a driver or passenger:
if they refuse to provide information, such as their name or social security number,
give false information, or
refuse to comply with instructions
