Losing your driving license

The police may temporarily or permanently remove your driving test:

  • a temporary driving ban is called the withdrawal of the driving rights

  • permanent driving ban is called the suspension of driving rights

In general

You may lose your driving test if you:

  • breaks traffic laws

  • collects 12 or more points within 3 years

Police may fine and revoke the driving rights of drivers with foreign driving licences according to the same rules as apply to Icelandic driving licences.

Notification and re-acquiring driving licences

When you lose your driving test, you will receive a notification sent to the Iceland.is mailbox.

The notice states:

  • what the traffic offence is

  • how long the driving ban is valid and when you can drive again

A driving licence is revalidated without a test

If the driving ban is temporary, your driving licence may be valid again without having to take a test again.

This is the case, for example, if the period of suspension is short and not because of serious offences requiring retraining or re-assessment of driving ability.

It is important to familiarize yourself with the notice you receive in the Iceland.is mailbox. It contains all information about the length of suspension and the conditions of re-delivery.

Take driving tests again and courses

Those who lose their driving licence or are placed under a driving ban may need to apply to get a driving licence again.

This is especially the case for those who have been deprived of their rights due to serious offences or repeat offences, to ensure that they have renewed their knowledge of the rules of the road and demonstrated their driving skills.

Permanent driving ban - suspension of driving rights

In the event of repeated and repeated violations of traffic laws, the police may permanently suspend a person from driving.

This applies to the most serious offences where road safety is seriously compromised.
