An au pair permit is granted for as long as the duration of the au pair contract, but not longer than one year.
If the holder of the permit stays abroad for more than three consecutive months, the residence permit can be revoked. A foreign national’s residence permit is automatically revoked if his/her domicile, which was registered in Iceland, has been registered abroad for a period of three months.
Right to change host family
If an au pair contract is terminated, the Directorate of Immigration shall be notified by submitting a special form.
An au pair can enter into a new contract with another host family. The new contract shall be submitted to the Directorate of Immigration together with documents on secure means of support from the new host family.
If less than three months are left of the validity period of the residence permit, a renewal of the permit should be applied for.
