Requirements


All applicants for residence permits must

  • prove their identity with a valid passport

  • give correct information about their purpose of stay in Iceland

  • meet the following basic requirements


Special requirements for au pair

  • You are between 18 and 25 years old at the time of application.

    • Note that it is the date of birth that is decisive. An application will be rejected if it submitted before the 18th birthday or after the applicant's 25th birthday.

  • You are not going to settle in Iceland.

  • You have made an agreement with a host family that meets the requirements set.

  • You do not have a familial connection to the host family.

Requirements to be met by the host family

  • The family must consist of a married couple or cohabiting partners with a child or children or a single parent with a child or children.

  • At least one adult member of the family must hold Icelandic citizenship or a permanent residence permit. This means that a couple residence permits cannot be a host family and a single parent with a temporary residence permit may also not be a host family.

  • There may not be a familial connection between the host family and the au pair.

  • A host family may only have one individual as an au pair at a time.

  • A host family must provide au pair food and a lockable separate room with a window, free of charge.

  • A host family must demonstrate sufficient means of support for an au pair.

  • A host family must pay au pair a minimum of ISK 15,000 per week in allowance.

  • The Directorate of Immigration may request information about a host family, including information on financial assistance or other assistance by the social services of the relevant municipality, as well as information about a criminal record, both in Iceland and abroad, if the Directorate considers it necessary.
