Residence card for family member of an EEA/EFTA citizen

Immediate family members of EEA/EFTA citizens, who are themselves non-EEA/EFTA citizens, may reside in Iceland if their residence is based on the rights of an EEA/EFTA citizen residing in Iceland.

If immediate family members of EEA/EFTA citizens wish to reside in Iceland for longer than three months, they must apply for a residence card to the Directorate of Immigration.

Immediate family members of EEA/EFTA citizens

  • Spouse (marital or cohabiting spouse).

  • Descendants, i.e. children or grandchildren of the EEA/EFTA citizen or his/her spouse, who are under the age of 21 or are their dependants.

  • Dependent direct relatives in the ascending line and those of the spouse (parents/grandparents).

Family members of students
Only spouses and decendants under the age of 21 have the right to reside in Iceland as family members of EEA/EFTA citizens who reside in Iceland as students.

EEA/EFTA citizens

EEA/EFTA citizens are citizens of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Citizens of those countries may stay and work in Iceland for up to three months from arrival, without being registered, or up to six months if seeking employment. If they wish to reside longer than three months in Iceland, they shall register with Registers Iceland

Application

Applications can only be submitted in paper form.

They can either be sent by regular mail to the Directorate of Immigration or delivered to the drop box in the Directorate’s reception.

Applications can also be handed in and paid for in the Directorate’s reception or at the offices of District Commissioners outside the capital area.

Processing fee

There is no fee for an application for a residence card for an EEA/EFTA family member.

Application confirmation

An applicant for a residence card as a family member of an EEA/EFTA citizen can ask for a confirmation of the application by contacting the Directorate of Immigration.
