Municipal elections 2026
For candidates
The deadline for submitting candidacies is 12:00 (noon) on Friday April 10th 2026.
Procedures for submitting candidacy documents vary between municipalities.
Who is eligible to stand for election?
Anyone who has the right to vote in the municipality and has an unblemished reputation.
Those who have the right to vote are:
Icelandic and Nordic citizens who are legally registered as residents in Iceland and will be 18 years old on election day.
Other foreign citizens who have been legally registered as residents in Iceland for three consecutive years before election day and will be 18 years old on election day.
Icelandic students living in the Nordic countries whose legal residence is registered in
Denmark, Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Norway, or Sweden.
Their voting rights apply in the municipality where they were last legally registered. The same applies to their spouses and children who reside with them in the respective country.
Note!
For students living in the Nordic countries to vote in municipal elections, they must apply to Registers Iceland to be added to the electoral register no later than 40 days before election day. A new application must be submitted for each municipal election, and it must include confirmation of enrollment in studies.
