Municipal elections 2026

Collection of endorsements

Candidate lists must collect endorsements in support of the candidacy and submit them along with the other required candidacy documents.

In many municipalities, it will be possible to collect endorsements electronically, but endorsements may also be collected on paper. Electronic endorsement collection will open in March.

The required number of endorsers is:
a. 10–20 endorsers in municipalities with 101–500 inhabitants,
b. 20-40 endorsers in municipalities with 501–2,000 inhabitants,
c. 40-80 endorsers in municipalities with 2.001–10.000 inhabitants,
d. 80-160 endorsers in municipalities with 10.001–50.000 inhabitants,
e. 160-320 endorsers in municipalities with 50.001+ inhabitants.

Electronic collection of endorsements

Electronic endorsement collection will open in March. If the municipal electoral commission has enabled electronic endorsement collection in the municipality, the representative of the candidate list may log in to Ísland.is and create an endorsement collection for the list. The person who creates the collection must be legally registered as a resident in the municipality. Their name and date of birth will be displayed with the collection.

The creator of the collection may authorize others to manage the endorsement collection on behalf of the candidate list, for example to monitor its progress, enter ID numbers of endorsers collected on paper, and generate a report for the municipal electoral commission.

Collection of endorsements on paper

A form for collecting endorsements on paper will soon be available. If the electronic endorsement system is used, the ID numbers from the paper forms may be entered into the system to display the status of the endorsement collection. However, the original paper endorsement lists must be submitted when the candidacy is filed
