Scholarships for blind and visually impaired students at the University of Iceland

The board of the Þórsteinssjóður is currently calling for applications for grants from the fund. The purpose of the fund is firstly to support blind and visually impaired students to study at the University of Iceland. Secondly, the objective of the fund is to promote research that can increase knowledge of the lives and conditions of blind and visually impaired individuals, especially in social and cognitive sciences.

The White Cane Safety Day

The White Cane Safety Day is held every year on 15 October. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the White Cane and the issues of interest to blind and visually impaired people.

The World Sight Day 2024 is held on October 10th. The day is intended to raise public awareness all over the world about blindness and visual impairment, vision loss and vision protection.

Skills camps for the visually impaired, the blind and the people with integrated visual and auditory impairment

The Blind community, Sjónstöðin, the Sports Association for the Disabled and Reykjadalur, under the guidance of the University of Reykjavík, will hold skills camps for children and young people aged 9 to 25 from 11 to 13 October.

Employment of occupational therapists at Sjónstöðin

A 100% job is available for occupational therapists who will work as consultants at Sjónstöðin - service and knowledge center for the blind, visually impaired and individuals with integrated vision and hearing impairment.

Do you want to learn how to teach blind/vision-impaired people how to communicate and process?

The Centre, in collaboration with Support for Independence, a fund run by the Blind Association and the Blind Workers’ Association, offers autumn courses in teaching the occupying and the transiting. The courses are on a university level and are rated to 10 credits at the advanced level (diploma).

International Day of Guide Dogs

International Day of Guide Dogs is being celebrated worldwide today, 24 April. In recent years, the number of guide dogs has increased steadily and we can expect to see a further increase in the number of guide dogs in the coming years. In May, the number 22 guide dog is expected to arrive in Iceland, of which 13 are currently active. We would like to use this day to shed light on the way guide dogs interact with people.

The conference and the workshop Look, find, use!

The conference and workshop See, find, use! (See it, Find it, Use it) to support sight for students with additional disabilities will be held in the building of Blindrafélagið on the 2nd floor from 27 - 28 October 2023. The conference is a collaboration between Blindrafélagið, Sjónstöðin and Positive eye UK.
