For the elderly
The NIFBVID provides advice to relatives and staff of social services and institutions such as nursing homes and care facilities. All advice is individualized and given in consultation with the person involved. The NIFBVID 's advisors can visit homes and institutions upon request. An assessment of accessibility is made, and suggestions for improvements are provided to enhance independence in daily activities.
Advice on combined vision and hearing impairment is offered, and there is good cooperation with institutions such as the National Hearing and Speech Institute of Iceland, the Communication Centre for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, social services, and advocacy organizations like the Icelandic Association of the Visually Impaired (BIAVI)..
All blind and visually impaired elderly individuals are offered assessments, training, and the provision of assistive devices such as computer-related devices and programs, recreational material in Braille, glasses, magnifiers, audio players, and white canes.
