Considerable variation in damage assessments in Grindavík

Inspections and assessments of damage to most residential and commercial properties in Grindavík has been completed, where damage has been reported to NTÍ. Currently assessors are working on cost estimates and preparation of appraisals, but it is expected that the first appraisals for less damaged properties will be sent to owners for presentation at the end of next week. In total, almost thirty assessors from four engineering firms have carried out damage assessment for NTÍ, as well as three independent and specialized assessors.

Damage assessments in Grindavik are going well

For the past two weeks assessors from NTI have been assessing damages in Grindavik, in total there have been 408 damage claims reported to NTI for houses and 53 claims for household items. Assessors that are working for NTI come from Verkis, Efla, VSÓ and Cowi (prior know as Mannvit). In addition three independent assessors are working for NTI. Of the 408 claims 330 are from private house owners and 78 are from businesses.

Status of damage claims in Grindavik

The National catastrophe insurance of Iceland (NTÍ) has received a total of 432 reports of damage due to the natural disaster in Grindavík, of which 8 reports were received last week. 266 house properties and 15 contents have been inspected, but 122 damage to house property and 29 damage to contents/moveable property remain uninspected, which is unclear when it will be possible to inspect.

Settlement of damages on destroyed houses

The natural catastrophe insurance of Iceland (NTÍ) has worked to settle damages to houses that have suffered total damage in the natural disaster in Grindavík. According to the laws that govern NTÍ, it is stipulated that damages payed by NTÍ must be used to repair or rebuild houses that have been damaged due to natural disasters, on the same lot. NTÍ will grant an exemption from this provision in light of the circumstances.

Delays in assesing damages in Grindavik

Due to the volcanic eruption that began on Sunday, January 14, appraisals that have been done on properties in Grindavík recently will inevitably be delayed. It was planned to present the evaluations and the result of the damage assessment before the end of January on the properties that were inspected before Christmas and give the residents a chance to express their views. A total of more than 260 properties had been inspected, while 115 were awaiting damage inspection.

326 damage claims in Grindavík have been received

Around 326 damage claims have been received in connection with the earthquakes in Grindavík last November. 251 on properties have been inspected and 14 inspections are scheduled for friday and monday

Payment of damages in Grindavik

A summary of all damage inspections in Grindavík is now taking place. Emphasis will be placed on finding solutions that ensure fair procedures and equality among the population. As soon as possible, the results of the evaluations will be presented to the owners, who will have the opportunity to express their views before the final decisions are made in their cases, but it is clear that this will not be achieved before the end of the year.

Damage inspections are going well

About 270 damage claims have been received in Grindavík, of which 65 claims have been received in the last 7 days. 140 claims have been inspected already and it is expected that around 120 inspections will take place this week. There are still a few cases where an inspection cannot be arranged due to absence of owners or other reasons. Most of the reported damages are related to house property, but there are 28 reports of damage to furniture or other items.
