Delays in assesing damages in Grindavik

15th January 2024

Due to the volcanic eruption that began on Sunday, January 14, appraisals that have been done on properties in Grindavík recently will inevitably be delayed. It was planned to present the evaluations and the result of the damage assessment before the end of January on the properties that were inspected before Christmas and give the residents a chance to express their views. A total of more than 260 properties had been inspected, while 115 were awaiting damage inspection.

According to information that NTÍ has received from Almannavarnir, there have been changes in the fissures in Grindavík in connection with the earthquakes that occurred yesterday, therefore further damage may have resulted in the properties that assessors had already inspected.

Assessors will continue to work on the processing of assessments as much as possible, but it is clear that this will somewhat delay the work ahead in the damage assessments. It is clear that it is necessary to go and inspect some properties again to see if further damage has occurred before a final damage assessment can be completed. It will be done as soon as it is safe to re-enter the area. If there are fissures on the plot or under the building, Grindavíkurbær will decide whether repairs to the building will be allowed. Residents will be informed separately if this is the case before the damage assessment is submitted for presentation.
As a result, there will inevitably be delays in processing cases from what was planned, but the safety of assessors must be ensured before they can resume work.
NTÍ regrets this delay, but NTÍ staff and assessors will do everything in their power to ensure that these delays do not become longer than necessary.
