Status of damage claims in Grindavik

2nd February 2024

The National catastrophe insurance of Iceland (NTÍ) has received a total of 432 reports of damage due to the natural disaster in Grindavík, of which 8 reports were received last week. 266 house properties and 15 contents have been inspected, but 122 damage to house property and 29 damage to contents/moveable property remain uninspected, which is unclear when it will be possible to inspect.

A total of 53 house properties (30 residential properties and 23 commercial properties) and 2 contents have been assessed as a total loss by NTÍ assessors. Contact has been made with all owners of premises that the assessors have already confirmed to be beyond repair.

In some cases, it is a complicated situation where residential buildings that are considered beyond repair have garages that are less damaged and are therefore considered repairable. It has not yet been concluded how those cases will be handled, and therefore a settlements for them will have to wait for a while. It is also clear that the events of January 14th in many cases resulted in significant additional damage to the properties that had previously been assessed as partial damage. Therefore, it is not realistic to submit a damage assessment of partially damaged property until there has been an opportunity to assess the effects of the eruption and the earthquakes in January.

The progress of the disaster in Grindavík is constantly changing, and it is becoming more and more complicated to take a stand on how to handle the settlement of assets other than total loss assets.

NTÍ will continue to make an effort to pay for the damages that can be paid for, but it is inevitable to withhold part of the damages to cover the demolition costs of all damaged properties in accordance with the law on NTÍ and the rightful disposal of damages. The prerequisite for being able to make deposits for damage that amounts to more than 15% of the property's fire compensation assessment is that the municipality has confirmed that renovation or reconstruction is not permitted.
