The National Planning Agency manages the development and implementation of digital planning and geographic databases on planning for maritime and coastal areas as well as environmental impact assessments. Digital planning

According to the Planning Act, both municipal master plans and local plans must be prepared in digital format. This also applies to coastal and marine spatial plans in accordance with the Act on Marine and Coastal Planning.

This means that land-use maps are to be created in a standardized format within a Geographic Information System (GIS). Digital planning complements traditional planning documents such as land use-maps and planning reports, and the formally approved and signed paper version of a master or local plan remains the legal reference.
