Teigur Addiction Treatment Day Unit

Teigur is a unit within the addiction and psychiatric treatment division at Landspítali. The treatment at Teigur is:

  • Five weeks long

  • Conducted on weekdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

The unit places strong emphasis on assessing and mapping out the full scope of challenges faced by those seeking treatment, providing support to help individuals build a life free from substances.

The treatment at Teigur:

  • Is based on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), addressing both substance use disorders and emotional difficulties.

  • Is delivered in a group therapy format led by psychologists and an addiction counselor.

  • Includes individual therapy sessions, where each participant meets with their assigned therapist weekly throughout the treatment.

Process at Teigur:

  • Treatment request approved

  • First individual interview

  • Preparation group/foundation group: twice a week, one hour at a time until it’s the individual’s turn to begin the actual treatment, usually two to three weeks

  • Day treatment at Teigur: every weekday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for five weeks

  • Regular individual sessions alongside group therapy, both in the preparation group and the actual day treatment

  • After treatment: weekly support in a group for twelve weeks

  • It is important to attend regularly for the treatment to be fully effective!

Referrals and conditions for treatment

The department accepts referrals from, among others, the emergency departments of Landspítali, other departments of the hospital, other healthcare institutions, independent professionals, child protection services, municipal social services, and Virk vocational rehabilitation.

The condition for treatment at Teigur is:

  • That the individual has stopped using substances.

  • The goal is to maintain continued sobriety.

  • Withdrawal treatment is not provided at Teigur.
