Structure and progress assessment

Structure

Special education in pediatric medicine at the Children's Hospital of Iceland involves up to two years of internship, based on regular attendance and clinical work in the departments of the Children's Hospital, participation in monitoring, teamwork and organized education according to the program. Apprentice doctors participate in the development of procedures and research/accreditation/quality projects during the course of study as well as participating in the teaching of medical students and other professions as appropriate.

Progress

Progress in the special education program is evaluated every approximately six months at an organized assessment meeting with a specialist medical practitioner, a supervisor, a teacher and a head of the faculty, where the documentation of knowledge and clinical skills in the curriculum (a logbook), the results of exams and performance evaluation are among the factors that are used as a basis.

In the second year of the special education the special education physician has increasing responsibilities. This includes the special education physician going on one inpatient visit and then discussing the patients with the relevant specialist physician and proposing treatment. The special education physician will also work closely with specialists of the various subspecialties, including in the outpatient department. He will also take an increased part in the teaching of medical students and in the continuing education of pediatricians and other professions.

Formal teaching

Formal instruction for the special education physicians group is one afternoon a week in general. In addition, instruction for all special education physicians is after a morning meeting (case meetings or resuscitation exercises) and at noon three days a week (Tuesday to Thursday). The Grand Round is on Fridays. On Thursdays after a morning meeting, there is a Children's Hospital's Educational Meeting. Every 3-4 months there is a Journal Club. It is expected that special education doctors will participate in this education/study and record their participation.
