Service

The department conducts over 1.3 million studies per year. In addition, the department includes Landspítali’s bleeding center, Landspítali’s antithrombotic services and specialist advice on coagulation.

Activities

  • Blood sampling in hospitals, reception centres and clinics

  • general biochemical research

  • protein and hormone studies

  • blood gas measurements

  • drug research

  • blood cells, bone marrow, body fluids and blood clotting.

Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre

The Haemophilia and Thrombosis Centre provides nationwide services, including diagnosis, consultation, and treatment of bleeding and clotting disorders.

Additionally, genetic testing and counseling are offered in collaboration with the Department of Genetics and Molecular Medicine at Landspítali.

Anticoagulation Services

The anticoagulation service supports patients undergoing blood-thinning treatment by providing blood tests, monitoring, and dosage adjustments for anticoagulant medications.

Patients on blood thinners require regular follow-ups with their primary care physician or a specialist.

Advice and contact points

  • Biochemists: Provide advice on research results, measurements and limit values.

  • Blood pathologists: counseling and services for patients with bleeding and coagulation problems.

  • Outside of daytime hours, shift workers provide advice and services.

  • The telephone service of Landspítali provides information about on-call physicians.
