Services

Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life for patients with life-threatening illnesses and their families. It involves preventing and alleviating physical, emotional, and social suffering with a patient-centered approach.

Admission to the Palliative Care Unit

Admission is prioritized based on urgency, and efforts are made to receive patients in the morning. Upon arrival, a doctor and nurse will conduct an interview to assess the patient’s condition and plan their stay. The length of stay depends on the reason for admission, the patient’s condition, and circumstances.

What to Bring?

  • Comfortable clothing and slippers.

  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, lip balm).

  • Medications and medication card.

  • Daily assistive devices (walker, wheelchair etc.).

  • Entertainment (books, audiobooks, music, etc.).

  • Small valuables with sentimental value (photos, keepsakes).

The hospital is not responsible for money or valuables such as phones or laptops.

Facilities at the Unit

12 private rooms in two connected houses. The unit provides medical and nursing care, physical therapy, pastoral care, and other support services. A homely atmosphere is prioritized, ensuring the best possible care for patients and their families.

Visitors & Overnight Stays
  • Family members can stay during the day.

  • One relative may stay overnight on a pull-out bed or recliner in the patient’s room.

  • It is recommended that no more than two relatives stay overnight at a time.

Important Considerations

  • Scents & Environment: Patients may be sensitive to strong smells such as smoke, perfumes, or flowers (e.g., lilies). Visitors are asked to keep this in mind.

  • Mobile Phones: Phones should be set to silent mode, and calls should not be taken in common areas.

  • Social Media: Respect for patients, fellow patients, their families, and staff is essential. Do not post about them or share photos on social media.

Outpatient Services

Palliative care doctors hold outpatient clinics twice a week:

  • One afternoon per week at the Palliative Care Unit in Kópavogur (House 6b).

  • One afternoon per week at the Day & Outpatient Clinic for Hematology and Oncology (11C) at Landspítali Hringbraut.
