Landspítali Cancer Center
About Landspítali Cancer Center
Role and Objectives
The Landspítali Cancer Center was established in 2025 as part of the development and strengthening of cancer services in Iceland. The center operates in accordance with international standards set by the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) and forms part of the accreditation of cancer care services and the implementation of the national cancer strategy.
The aim of the center is to support coordinated, safe, and high-quality care for people with cancer, from diagnosis and treatment through follow-up care. The center also places strong emphasis on scientific research, innovation, and continuous service improvement.
Patient-Centred Care
Patients are at the core of the center’s activities. Particular emphasis is placed on providing information, encouraging participation, and supporting patients and their families throughout all stages of care.
Research and Development
Research is an integral part of the work of the Landspítali Cancer Center. The goal is to connect clinical practice, quality improvement, and research so that new knowledge can be translated into everyday care.
Work is underway to establish a cancer research center in collaboration with Háskóli Íslands, with a focus on interdisciplinary research, healthcare education, and international collaboration.
Quality and Future Vision
The establishment of the Landspítali Cancer Center is part of the long-term development of cancer services at Landspítali, aligned with international standards and national healthcare policy.
Through the implementation of OECI standards, the foundation is being built for continuous improvement, quality measurement, and international benchmarking, with the aim of improving care, patient experience, and outcomes for people with cancer in Iceland.
