Emergency psychiatric services for people with urgent mental health problems
People can seek help at the emergency psychiatric service for urgent mental health issues without an appointment or a referral. An initial assessment of the individual’s problems is carried out, and people are referred for further evaluation and/or treatment as needed.
Follow-up Care by the Emergency Psychiatric Service
The department provides short-term treatment for acute mental health problems. Emphasis is placed on finding appropriate follow-up care once treatment at the emergency service is completed. Follow-up care may include services within or outside Landspítali. Referrals to the emergency psychiatric service are accepted only from the psychiatric emergency department.
At the emergency psychiatric department the following services are not provided:
Prescriptions for addictive medication
Administration of addictive medication
Initiation of withdrawal treatment
Renewal of prescriptions or issuing of certificates
