Specialist Doctors' Agreement
Only available in Icelandic.
An agreement was signed between specialist doctors and Iceland Health and entered into force on 1 September 2023. The contract states what documents must be submitted to Iceland Health in order to be registered on the contract. A physician shall familiarize himself with the content of the agreement.
If a doctor wishes to work in accordance with the agreement between Iceland Health and the Reykjavík Medical Association on the services of self-employed specialist doctors, the first step is to notify Iceland Health. To do so, go to the website of Iceland Health – Health Insurance – select the case category Contracts – procurement and put in the subject "Application for a service contract – specialist doctor". A doctor shall also provide information about his/her specialty, where and when he/she intends to commence work. The admission of new doctors to a service agreement is on January 1st and July 1st each year.
Before the application can be approved, all required supporting documents must have been submitted, i.e. a copy of an operating license, a copy of the Directorate of Health's confirmation of the operation of the practice and a copy of professional liability insurance from an insurance company, in addition to which an application for patient insurance must be submitted through Iceland Health Data Portal. In order for the supporting documents to be delivered in the correct form to the right place, they must be sent through Iceland Health Data Portal. Once the application has been submitted, the doctor will receive the terms and conditions for access to Iceland Health information system for electronic signature.
Apply for a service agreement for out-of-hospital specialty doctors.
Iceland Health does not pay bills for work carried out before the service agreement has been signed.
It is the doctor's responsibility to submit the application and the required documents to Iceland Health.
If a doctor intends to move to another workplace and/or add a workplace, the following information must be available before the person begins work at the new location.
Confirmation from the Office of the Chief Medical Officer that the doctor in question meets the professional minimum requirements to operate the healthcare service that has been notified (must be in place before operations commence at the practice to which the doctor is relocating or adding their services).
Confirmation of professional liability insurance (optional liability insurance) from an insurance company.
If there is a change in employment percentage, it is important to update the registration for patient insurance in the Iceland Health's data gateway, so that the total employment percentage is recorded.
The notification shall be sent to laeknar@sjukra.is
