Breast screening
Breast-related symptoms
If you experience breast-related symptoms, it is recommended that you contact a nurse via the 1700 helpline, the Heilsuvera online chat, or your local primary healthcare clinic. A nurse will assess your symptoms, direct your inquiry to the appropriate channel, book an urgent appointment, and/or provide a referral to the Breast Center.
Breast cancer screening
Breast cancer screening is an examination for women who have no symptoms. Regular screening allows for the detection of cancer or precancerous conditions at an early stage. This can improve the prognosis and simplify treatment.
The screening involves taking low-dose X-rays of the breasts (mammography). The procedure takes about 10 minutes.
Women aged 40–69 receive an invitation every two years.
Women aged 70–74 receive an invitation every three years.
Women over the age of 74 do not receive an invitation, but are welcome to book an appointment for screening.
Results are sent electronically to the "My Pages" (mínar síður) section on Heilsuvera and island.is within three weeks.
