General information

The Coordination Centre for Cancer Screening (SKS) plays a key role in the organization and development of cancer screening in Iceland. SKS works systematically to ensure the quality of screenings, encourage participation, and ensure that screenings are conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Directorate of Health.

SKS is also responsible for sending out invitations and response letters, and provides information and advice regarding screenings to both healthcare professionals and the general public.

Cancer screening is the systematic search for specific types of cancer, or their precursor stages, in individuals who have no symptoms.

The goal of cancer screening is to reduce cancer-related mortality within the population. Through organized screening, it is possible to detect precancerous conditions or early-stage cancer—or even prevent cancer entirely—often before any symptoms appear, thereby increasing the likelihood of successful treatment and improving the prognosis.

Breast screening is an examination of the breasts for those who are asymptomatic, where the objective is to screen for breast cancer
