Terms of use

The Icelandic Audio Library is a governmental organisation whose legal role is to make printed material accessible to those who cannot interpret written material in print form.

The Icelandic Audio Library is not open to the general public. Library materials are available only to registered members who have provided proof of print disability.

The Icelandic Audio Library reserves the right to carry out checks as to whether users are following the library’s terms and conditions. Distribution of materials to people who are not registered members constitutes a breach of copyright and may result in a fine. Loans to members are recorded and traceable.

Membership may be cancelled if suspicion arises that a library member has failed to abide by the library’s terms and conditions. Library members must treat materials with respect both with regards to the author and the narrator(s). All pertinent legislation must be complied with.

There is an annual library charge for those aged 18 and over, in accordance with the provisions on charges in article 19 of the Libraries Act 2012 No 150.

Library members must inform the library of any changes to their personal details, such as address, email, or telephone number. Upon reaching the age of 18, users must renew their library membership by providing updated personal information and resubmitting their diagnostic documentation. The documentation does not need to be recent.

Applicants for membership (or, in the case of children, a parent/guardian) must sign a declaration confirming that they have read and understood the library’s terms and conditions. Changes may be made to terms and conditions at any time and without previous notification.

The Icelandic Audio Library operates in accordance with the Libraries Act 2012 No 150 and the Copyright Act 1972 No 73 (see also Copyright Act English translation.

In addition the Icelandic Audio Library operates in accordance with the Regulation on the Icelandic Audio Library 2013 No 939 and the Agreement between the Icelandic Audio Library and the Icelandic Association of Authors of 2022.
