Application requirements for payment participation in tooth plants
On September 1st, a new procedure tariff and tariff for dentistry, established on the basis of an agreement between the Iceland Health and the Icelandic Dental Association.
Various changes were made to the application requirement for certain tasks of dentists, which mainly aim to simplify their work.
It is noted that the payment participation of disabled people and elderly people for implantation of dental implants in a dental dent will in future be subject to a pre-approved application to the Iceland Health, as has been the case in certain costly treatments. Dentists who plan to provide such treatment with the participation of the Iceland Health will therefore in future have to apply for the treatment to the Iceland Health. This will apply to dentists in Iceland as well as dentists abroad, see below.
Other information on dental payments can be found here.
About dental payment abroad
Iceland Health reimburses health insured individuals for general dental care that is requested in the EEA. The payment participation is based on the so-called cross border health care directive (2011/24/EU). The purpose of the directive is to give EEA citizens the right to seek health care in any country of the EEA and receive the same reimbursement as if the service had been provided in their home country.
In certain cases, an approved application must be submitted before treatment is granted. The same requirements are made for a pre-approved application for dental treatment abroad as in Iceland. That is, in cases where pre-approvement is required for treatment in Iceland (e.g. for implantation of dental implants in a toothless gum), an approved application for treatment abroad must also be submitted before it is granted. Otherwise, Iceland Health is not authorized to reimburse the costs.
The application shall be sent to the Iceland Health with sufficient supporting documentation, i.e. a certificate from the dentist on the need for treatment, along with the necessary imaging if appropriate.
For those who plan to apply for services abroad in September or October 2024, it is sufficient to submit an application before the end of October and then a temporary exemption will be granted from the requirement for a pre-approved application (as all necessary information is included). After that time, a pre-approved application will be the condition for the payment participation of the Iceland Health.
Applications for approval for treatment for dental work abroad can be obtained under Applications and forms - Rights between countries, Umsókn um samþykki fyrir meðferð vegna tannlæknaverks erlendis
The abovementioned action and tariff took effect on 1 September 2024.
