Apply for a license for professional security services

General

The National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police grants permission to operate security services.

Security services may include:

• monitoring of closed areas or areas open to the public, either by patrols or cameras.

• transfer of valuables,

• to receive and carry out invitations from individuals for assistance,

• receiving and carrying out calls from fire alarms, water leaks or intrusions,

• protection of individuals with bodyguards,

• other parallel security services as determined by the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police.

Conditions for authorisation

A person or a registered company may obtain a licence to provide security services.

Application process

The application

The application must be in writing and include the following:

• Applicant's name, national ID number and the location of place of business.

• The specific security services the applicant intends to perform, along with a detailed description of their implementation.

• A declaration that the applicant meets the conditions for obtaining the license.

Application for individuals

must also include

• Legal domicile

• Criminal record of the applicant

• Other documents considered necessary for the evaluation of the application.

Application for a company or association

must also include:

• The name and national ID number of the CEO

• The names and national ID numbers of the board members

• Criminal record of the director and those who are members on the board of directors.

  • If a new director is appointed or a change occurs in the board of directors of a company, the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police must be notified within 14 days, as well as other necessary documents accompanying the application.

  To ensure that the applicant meets the requirements for obtaining the permit, the following documents must be submitted with the application:

Criminal record

Must include criminal record.

Registered companies must submit criminal record certificates for the managing director and all members of the company’s board of directors. If a new managing director is appointed or there is a change in the company’s board of directors, the District Commissioner of the National Police must be notified within 14 days, together with any other required supporting documents.

Estate guardianship certificates

This is a certificate confirming that the applicant has not been declared bankrupt.

Any other documents deemed necessary for the assessment of the application.

Duration

The permit is valid for 5 years for the activities specified in the permit.

Renewal

The same rules apply to applications for renewal of the permit.
