Private Pilot Licence
Composed of
theoretical and practical studies which a student must complete at an approved flight school
international theoretical exams at the Icelandic Transportation Authority
A private pilot student must be
at the age of 16 before making his first solo flight
holder of a Class 2 medical certificate
at the age of 17 to be issued a PPL.
Theoretical training
Theoretical studies are conducted in accordance with a published curriculum that includes nine subjects:
010-Air law
020 - Human performance
030-Meteorology
040 - Communication
050 - Principles of flight
060 - Operational procedures
070-Flight performance and planning
080- Aircraft general knowledge
090-Navigation
Exams must be completed with a minimum score of 75 percent for each subject and applicants have a maximum of four attempts at each subject.
Students have
12 months to complete the first exam at the Icelandic Transport Authority in each subject after completion at the airline school.
18 months to complete all exams at the Icelandic Transport Authority after taking the first exam at the Icelandic Transport Authority
After graduation from theoretical examinations, students have 24 months to complete the practical part of the training at a flight school and pass a skill test.
Those who do not meet any of the above conditions must undergo retraining at a flight school and repeat the theoretical exams at the Icelandic Transport Authority.
Practical training
A PPL(A) practical course consists of a minimum of 45 hours flight time, of which
25 hours of flight time with an instructor
ten solo flight hours
Of these 10 hours solo flight hours, 5 hours must be solo on a cross-country flight, including one cross-country flight of at least 100 NM (185 km) in length, with full stop landings at two different aerodromes different from the aerodrome of departure.
Following the completion of the practical training, a practical skill test is required for the issue of a PPL.
Theoretical exams at the Icelandic Transport Authority should be completed before the practical skill test takes place.
