Heirs may appoint an agent in a request for a licence to make personal returns. A person who is granted authority to act on behalf of heirs in the division of the estate. Powers may also be conferred on the private exchange mandate form. The original of the powers of attorney must be submitted to the district commissioner.

If there is no agent, the heirs must all agree to arrangements with the estate's assets each time.

The request may have to be accompanied by:

  • A marriage settlement or other agreement on the finances of a married couple or cohabiting couple

  • Power of attorney for private exchange

  • The term of appointment of a guardian if the heir is deprived of legal competence

The District Commissioners shall review the request and issue a permit if the conditions are met.

The licence is sent to all heirs to a digital mailbox at Iceland.is and the original is delivered or sent by mail if requested.

No fee shall be paid when a request for a licence to exchange personal licence is submitted to the district commissioner.

After a licence has been issued, heirs may proceed with dividing up the estate, including selling assets.
