If the heirs do not complete a private settlement within a time limit granted by the District Commissioner, he shall cancel the patent and demand that the estate be officially divided.

The District Commissioners may, however, extend the period for the completion of a private settlement in accordance with a written and reasoned request from the heir.

The District Commissioner shall also cancel a patent heir's licence to heirs if they fail to comply with conditions he has set for a personal return or if the district commissioner refuses to confirm a private settlement.

If an estate is taken into public ownership at the request of an heir or creditor after a patent settlement licence has been issued, the licence shall automatically lapse upon the issue of a ruling.

The heirs' liability for all obligations and obligations of the deceased remains, although a patent licence is subsequently cancelled.
