Damaged vehicles and repair process
Labelling of damaged vehicles on import
Importation of damaged vehicles
The registration certificate or title presented on import of used vehicles must be without restriction on usage of the vehicle in the country where the registration certificate or the title was issued. When information is stated on these papers that the vehicle has suffered, or could have suffered, damage, this constitutes restriction on use and new registration in Iceland is not permitted.
A vehicle with the following comments on the registration papers may not be registered in Iceland for these reasons (not an exhaustive list):
Registration in Iceland is not permitted: Collision, Damaged, Dismantled, Fire, Flood, For Parts Only, Gray Market, Hail, Junk, Rebuilt, Rebuilt Salvaged, Reconditioned, Reconstructed, Repaired, Revived Junk, Revived Salvage, Salvage, Scrap, Scrap Vehicle, Total Loss, Totaled, VIN Missing, Water Damage, Wrecked (not a complete list).
Vehicles with the following comments on registration papers may in most cases be registered in Iceland, but the Icelandic Transport Authority will evaluate each case individually. It may also be required in some cases to provide additional information (e.g. certificates on wheel alignment or chassis). In some cases, the vehicle may be labelled as "Damaged Vehicle I" (tjónaökutæki II) on import which means that the vehicle must undergo repairs at an approved repair shop before it can be registered in Iceland. In these cases, a special remark is put into the registry for the vehicle informing that the vehicle has been damaged before import (that will always visible in the registry history).
Registration in Iceland is usually permitted (but not always): Abandoned, Assembled Vehicle, Historic, Theft Recovery, Kit, Replica, Remanufactured, Warranty Returned, Lemon Law Buyback, Not eligible for plates - no tax paid (not a complete list).
If other remarks are on the registration documents than those mentioned above, it is recommended that you contact the Icelandic Transport Authority to evaluate the registration information. It is recommended that this be done before the purchase takes place and before a vehicle is shipped here.
