Re-evaluation of a damaged vehicle

Vehicle inspection stations are authorized to conduct a re-evaluation of a damaged vehicle labelled as "Damaged Vehicle I" (tjónaökutæki I).

When re-evaluating a "Damaged Vehicle I", the vehicle shall be taken to an inspection station, but the inspection station may also offer the service of carrying out the inspection in other places.

The result of a re-evaluation of a damaged vehicle

A re-evaluation may lead to the cancellation of the damage labelling or to a vehicle being considered a "Damaged vehicle II" (tjónaökutæki II). After the re-evaluation, the inspection station sends its results to the Icelandic Transport Authority.

Conditions for re-evaluation of a damaged vehicle

A re-evaluation of a vehicle labelled as "Damaged vehicle I" can be requested within 20 working days from labelling. After that time, the vehicle is automatically labelled as "Damaged vehicle II" and must undergo an approved repair procedure if it is to be put into traffic ever again.

A re-evaluation shall be carried out before repairs begin. If repairs have begun, the inspection station is not allowed to carry out a re-evaluation. Dismantling of simple parts or removal of covers to be able to see more clearly the damage, should not be considered as repairs, however it is preferable to do so in consultation with the inspection station that is doing the re-evaluation. Blown tires may also be fixed.

Cost

  • A fee for the re-evaluation must be paid to the inspection station when re-evaluation is requested.
