The NOMESCO Classification of Surgical Procedures (NCSP) is a Nordic classification system published by NOMESKO (The Nordic Medico-Statistical Committee).
The classification system consists of 15 main chapters on surgical procedures, arranged according to the body's anatomy, four supplementary chapters on tests and treatment methods relating to surgery, and finally, one additional chapter on descriptions relevant to the other chapters. NCSP codes consist of three letters and two numbers.
The NCSP classification system has been in use in Iceland since 1997 and contains several Icelandic secondary codes, the so-called V-codes used for describing cardiac catheterisation, etc.
The NCSP classification system, which has been used in Iceland, is the translation of the English version, the basic version of the classification system for all Nordic countries. The classification system can be accessed on the website Skafl.is. The English version of NCSP can be found in a pdf document on the NOMESKO website. The English version of the NCSP classification was last updated in 2014.
The NCSP classification system has recently been developed to support customised country codes. The classification system is subject to various restrictions and is structured, so it has become challenging to create new codes.
The Directorate of Health issues a national version of NCSP called the NCSP-IS, allowing for more detailed registration.
NordDRG publishes a NCSP+ mapping file where the country codes of the Nordic countries are mapped to NCSP.
©The Nordic Medico-Statistical Committee (NOMESCO) holds the copyright to the NCSP version. Örn Bjarnason has the copyright to an Icelandic translation of NCSP.
