The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision, is called ICD-10 in everyday speech. The classification system is published by the World Health Organization (WHO), which maintains a specific website on ICD-10 and regular updates. Updates in Iceland take WHO's instructions into account.

The classification system consists of 20 main chapters and various sub-chapters. The main chapters list different diagnoses related to specific organ systems, depending on the type of disease or its cause (such as infectious diseases and cancer). Still others report cases due to external causes, such as accidents.

In hospitals, it is expected to use complete accuracy. However, in primary healthcare, coding with three-digit codes is permitted, except where other requirements are for accuracy, such as those with notifiable diseases.

ICD-10 is used for recording diagnoses and has been published in book form in English and Icelandic and an electronic format both for web publication and for use in software systems in healthcare institutions.
