Patients who undergo hysterectomy due to high risk abnormal cells or where the post-operative diagnosis is precancerous changes in the cervix, are at increased risk of vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN), and invasive vaginal disease.

Follow-up should be based on clinical evaluation but as a guideline is the following:

  • Follow-up vaginal sample for abnormal cells analysis and HPV test 6 months after hysterectomy

  • If tests indicate abnormal results, the patient should be referred to undergo colposcopy
