Police are authorised to use force in the performance of their duties.
The police may not use more force than is necessary at any given time. They must use the mildest means available to achieve a legitimate objective.
Methods and weapons
The use of force by the police is broadly divided into the following categories:
Other weapons
Gas weapons: gas guns, tear gas and smoke devices. Also gas devices fired from firearms.
Flashbang equipment: equipment to disorient a person. Only for use by specially trained police teams.
Explosives: Explosives used as part of police weaponry.
Training
To be allowed to carry and use weapons, police officers must have completed the required training. The Police Education and Development Centre provides basic training or training for police students, while advanced training is handled by each district.
Maintenance training
Police officers must undergo maintenance training and pass proficiency tests for the use of specific firearms. To be authorized to carry an electroshock weapon, annual maintenance training must be completed.
