Complaining about police treatment
General
Civilians can bring complaints about the work or conduct of the police to the police department or send a formal complaint to an independent committee.
Complaints
If you feel disappointed in how a police officer carries out their duties, you can contact the police department where the police officer is employed.
There are 9 police departments in Iceland. Questions are answered and referred to the Committee for the Supervision of Police or the district attorney's office, as appropriate.
Greater Reykjavik area
Messages can be sent to the Capital Region Police through the e-mail address lrh@lrh.is, if you wish to complain about the work methods or the conduct of a police officer in the greater Reykjavik area while on duty.
Submitting a formal complaint
Individuals may send formal complaints relating to:
the suspected criminal conduct of a police officer,
working methods,
or presentation,
to the Committee for the Supervision of Police.
The committee is independent. Their website has instructions on how to submit a notification.
Suspected criminal offence
The District Prosecutor investigates a complaint against a police officer for a suspected criminal offence in the performance of his duties.
