The Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority issues permits for the use of radioactive materials. It is not permitted to begin use of radioactive materials until a permit has been issued.

Applications for import must be made separately, even if the user handles the import himself.

Application process

Different information is requested depending on whether the radioactive source is open or closed.

To fill out an application you must have available information on:

  • name, ID number, education and email address of the person responsible for the use of the radioactive source

  • the user of the radioactive material, e.g. the name of the company and the name and e-mail address of a contact person

  • information about the substance, e.g. its nuclide(s), radioactivity, packaging and intended use

  • information on the device(s) containing the radioactive material, if applicable

Supporting data

In order to be licensed for the use of radioactive materials, you must:

  • appoint a responsible person approved by the Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority

  • submit a plan for disposal of radioactive material and, if appropriate, confirmation of the payment of costs related to disposal

  • submit a safety assessment

  • submit a plan for disposal

In the case of a highly active radioactive source, the applicant should also:

  • deliver a security assessment and emergency response plan

The fees are collected in accordance with the applicable tariff.

Application processing time

The application process takes about 2 weeks after all documents have been submitted. If necessary data is missing, you will receive an email.
