Application for import of radioactive material

Import of radioactive material is subject to the permission of the Icelandic Radiation Safety Authority.

Import of radioactive material below is not needed for material below the license threshold.

A license for import is not granted unless a license for use is available or an application for a license for use has been submitted.

License fees are billed according to the applicable tariff.

Application process

The import license is applied for by the carrier or the user of the radioactive material.

Conditions and supporting evidence

For an import license, you need:

• license to use the radioactive material, or an application for license for use has been made

• which carrier handles import

• the exact information about the material

• confirmation from the manufacturer that it accepts the radioactive material after use

Application

To fill out an application you must have available information on:

• carrier: name of the company and name and email address of a contact person

• the licensee for use of the radioactive material: the name of the company and the name and email address of a contact person

• information on the substance: its nuclide(s), radioactivity, packaging and intended use

• information about the equipment containing the radioactive material, if applicable

• information on the person responsible for use of the radioactive material: name, ID number, e-mail address and education or status

Application processing time

It is expected that an authorisation will be issued within two weeks of receiving all necessary documents. Additional documents are often required and a request for such documents is made by e-mail to the applicant.
