Child support is provided by means of support for children under the age of 18 and is paid to parents or support staff if the conditions are met.
Right to child pension
You can apply for a child's pension if:
you are a recipient of a disability, rehabilitation or old-age pension,
the parent is deceased,
the child is unfathered,
the other parent of a child is serving a sentence and the sentence has lasted at least three months. Applies only to parents in marriage or a registered partnership.
Rights may exist on the part of both parents, for example if one parent has a disability assessment and the other parent has passed away.
Parents on disability grant may receive 75 per cent of the amount of the child's pension for each child, but these payments are income-related and are cancelled if the disability grant payments are cancelled due to income.
Step- and adopted parents are entitled to a child pension for step- and adopted children if the child does not have a living parent.
Residence conditions
The condition is that either the parent or the child itself has been resident in Iceland for at least three years. An exemption from the three-year rule applies if a transfer is made from a state where a social security agreement applies.
Amount of child pension
The amount of the child's pension is 46.147 ISKper month. Child pension is not taxable.
Payment structure
Child pension is prepaid on the first day of each month.
If payments are approved retrospectively, credits are paid out as quickly as possible to the bank account listed on My pages.
Pensioners liable for child support, where child support is paid through TR, do not receive their child pension directly, but it is added to the child support payments.
