Expedition Operations & Safety Specialist (Cycling & Bikepacking) - The Fjord Hub ehf.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled professional to support and expand our cycling operations into remote, backcountry, and expedition-based tourism in Iceland. This role is essential to the safe execution, technical reliability, and international development of our guided bikepacking and highland cycling programs.
The position combines advanced bicycle mechanics, wilderness safety leadership, expedition logistics, and international bikepacking expertise. It is designed to support operations in Iceland’s high-risk, remote environments where technical failure or medical incidents can have serious consequences.
Key Responsibilities
Expedition Operations & Leadership
Plan, coordinate, and lead multi-day bikepacking and backcountry cycling expeditions in remote regions of Iceland
Oversee daily field operations in environments with limited infrastructure and emergency access
Serve as on-site decision-maker responsible for safety, logistics, and route execution
Safety & Risk Management
Act as primary safety officer for remote expeditions
Develop and implement risk management protocols for extreme weather, terrain, and isolation
Provide wilderness medical response and emergency care when required
Conduct pre-trip risk assessments and ongoing field safety evaluations
Advanced Technical Bicycle Support
Perform high-level mechanical diagnostics and repair on expedition bicycles, including drivetrain systems, hydraulic brakes, and load-bearing configurations
Execute field repairs in remote environments where standard workshop support is unavailable
Build and maintain bicycles optimized for long-distance, off-road, and multi-day unsupported travel
Program Development & International Expertise
Contribute to the development of international bikepacking programs and partnerships
Advise on route design, gear systems, and expedition strategy based on global bikepacking experience
Support growth of the company’s offerings beyond local services into specialized cycling tourism
Training & Capacity Building
Train staff and clients in bikepacking techniques, field repair, and expedition safety
Establish internal standards for technical reliability and risk management
Support development of best practices for operating in Iceland’s remote cycling environments
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated expertise in advanced bicycle mechanics, particularly for off-road and expedition use
Extensive experience in multi-day backcountry or international bikepacking expeditions
Certification in wilderness medical response (e.g., Wilderness First Responder or equivalent)
Proven ability to operate in remote, high-risk environments with limited external support
Experience in expedition leadership, guiding, or outdoor operations
Strong knowledge of risk management, logistics, and safety planning in extreme conditions
Work hours are flexible, daytime hours between 9am and 6pm
Wages, 3.500,- ISK per hour
