Anesthesiologist - Heilbrigðisstofnun Vestfjarða
Anesthesiologist – Westfjords, Iceland (Full-time, Permanent)
We are looking for an anesthesiologist to join the Westfjords Healthcare Institution (HVest) in one of the most unique regions of Iceland. This is a full-time, permanent position in a smaller healthcare setting where you will have a broad and varied role, with a high level of professional autonomy and the opportunity to make a real clinical impact.
The position includes general anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, and involvement in emergency care as needed. You will also contribute to inpatient and primary care services when required, take part in teaching and supervision of junior doctors and other healthcare staff, and have the opportunity to be involved in quality improvement and, where relevant, research projects. Depending on experience and interest, there may also be involvement in air ambulance services.
HVest employs around 300 staff and provides healthcare services across the Westfjords, including primary care, hospital services, and nursing care. The main facilities are located in Ísafjörður and Patreksfjörður, with outreach services across the region. Working here means being part of a close-knit team where collaboration across specialties is essential and highly valued.
We are looking for a specialist in anesthesiology with qualifications recognized within the EEA. The role requires the ability to work independently in a broad clinical setting, along with strong communication and teamwork skills. Experience in acute care is important, and training such as ALS is expected, while additional qualifications such as pediatric life support or trauma training are considered an advantage. A good level of English is required; Icelandic is not mandatory at the start but is encouraged over time.
We offer a supportive working environment, assistance with relocation and housing, and a role where your contribution is both visible and valued. Salaries are based on Icelandic collective agreements.
Life in the Westfjords offers something very different from larger urban settings. Commuting time is minimal, and nature is right outside your door. The region is known for its strong sense of community and is particularly well suited for families, with good access to schools, sports, and cultural activities. There are also increasing opportunities for partners relocating to the area.
Applications should include a CV, cover letter, copies of diplomas and specialist certification, and any relevant supporting documents. Applications are assessed in accordance with Icelandic regulations, including review by the Medical Evaluation Committee.
