Vehicle deregistration applies when a vehicle is no longer roadworthy, has been scrapped, is missing or has been permanently exported.
Deregistration and registering a vehicle out of use are not the same. Deregistration means that a vehicle is removed from the vehicle register, whereas taking a vehicle out of use is temporary. A vehicle that has been taken out of use can be registered for use again at a later date.
Types of deregistrations
Re-registering of a deregistered vehicle
In exceptional cases, it is possible to re-register a vehicle that has been deregistered. However, it is not permitted to re-register a vehicle that has been handed over for recycling (deregistered due to recycling).
Conditions for re-registration
To re-register a vehicle, it must pass a re-registration inspection at an inspection station. The inspection confirms that the vehicle meets the requirements to be registered again.
Process
Fill out an application for the re-registration of a deregistered vehicle.
Take the vehicle to a re-registration inspection at an inspection station.
Once the vehicle has passed the inspection, it is re-registered.
Important to note
If a new owner takes over the vehicle, ownership must be transferred before it is re-registered.
Ownership transfers cannot be registered for vehicles that have been deregistered as missing or scrapped.
An insurance company must be specified when re-registering the vehicle.
