Vehicle deregistration

Deregistration request

Scrapped vehicle

In order to deregister a vehicle it must be scrapped at an authorised scrapping facility. The Icelandic Recycling Fund refunds a recycling deposit for vehicles returned to recycling.

When the vehicle is received by the recycling facility, a certificate of disposal is issued. If the certificate of disposal is issued on paper the original copy must be submitted to an inspection station or to the Icelandic Transport Authority.

Information on the payment of the recycling deposit and the online process of deregistration for recycling can be found here.

Vehicle transported abroad

If you intend to transport your vehicle from Iceland and register it abroad, you must deregister it in Iceland. You must fill out a deregistration request and submit supporting documents, either a bill of lading along with the vehicle's number plates or a new registration certificate from the country the vehicle was transported to.

Missing vehicle

  • In order to deregister a missing or stolen vehicle, you must fill out a deregistration request.

  • If a vehicle has been stolen, it must be reported immediately to the police and registered as such.

If a vehicle is not found within six weeks, you can submit a deregistration request to the Icelandic Transport Authority.

Vehicle disposed of before July 1st 2003

If a vehicle was registered as „removed from traffic“ before July 1st 2003 and has been disposed of but a certificate of destruction cannot be issued, you can request a deregistration.

Change of ownership on a deregistered vehicle

A change of ownership cannot be registered for vehicles that have been deregistered for recycling or missing.
