Studying while on unemployment benefits

Students are usually not entitled to unemployment benefits. There are however exceptions to this, for example if the studies are 20 units or less, an individual loses their job after the semester has begun or the studies are defined as studies alongside employment.

Conditions

  • Students must always submit a study contract.

  • The applicant must have obtained the rights for unemployment benefits.

  • Individuals who are studying and receive unemployment benefits have the same duties as other people who receive unemployment benefits.

Study Contract

You must always apply for a study contract if you wish to receive unemployment benefits during your studies. Application for a study contract is sent to radgjafar@vmst.is.

Obligations

Individuals who are studying and receiving unemployment benefits have the same obligations as others who receive unemployment benefits:

  • Be actively seeking employment.

  • To be ready to take the job that is offered.

  • Confirming job search monthly on the Directorate of Labour's My pages.

  • To answer invitations for meetings, interviews and other things that the Directorate of Labour may send.
