About rights to unemployment benefits

When to apply?

Individuals can apply 14 days before they become unemployed. It is important to apply no later than the day you become unemployed, that is, when the notice period ends. You can always cancel the application.

Why apply early?

  • Unemployment benefits are paid from the date of application, not from the date of approval of the application.

  • Unemployment benefits are not paid retroactively.

  • It takes 4-6 weeks to process an application. If supporting documents are missing, the processing time may be extended.

Application status

When a decision is reached, a notification is sent to the applicant's e-mail address. If no such notification has been received, the application is still being processed.

Amount

The final decision regarding calculated rights and payment amount is not made until the application has been processed.

Amounts and calculations

First payment

Unemployment benefits are paid on the last working day of the month after the application is approved. Payment is made for the passing month.

For the first two weeks, basic unemployment benefits are paid. Then the benefits are income related for three months.

Income related unemployment benefits are 70% of your average total wages up to a maximum of ISK 575,246 and are paid for three months.

It is not necessary to apply for income related benefits.

To receive unemployment benefits, you must confirm your job search once a month, between the 20th-25th of each month.

This is done by clicking the orange banner that appears at the top of the Directorate of Labour's My pages. The names of the places where job applications have been submitted during the past month are also entered there.

  • Between 20th-25th, payment is made on the last working day of the month.

  • Between the 26th-3rd of the following month, payment is made 3-7 working days after the end of the month.

  • After the 3rd of the following month, the application is automatically deregistered and payment will be made with the next month’s payout if the individual contacts the service office.

It is necessary to confirm job search even though the application is still being processed, and also when payments have been suspended due to rule violations.

Check My Pages

It is important to regularly check messages that appear on the Directorate of Labour's My pages.

What affects payments?

While an individual is receiving unemployment benefits, they must report any income, side jobs, and other changes. Otherwise, they may have to repay overpaid benefits, or payments may be suspended, that is, a waiting period may be imposed.

What affects payments?

Benefit period

You can receive unemployment benefits for 30 months. After that, you must earn a new 30-month period.
