Status of my case

Due to the interests of the investigation, there are limits to how much information the police can provide about the status of cases.

The processing time for police cases varies. Some cases are handled quickly, but when an investigation is required, it can take anywhere from a few months to a year or longer.

The status of my case

  1. A case is reported to the police and taken under review.

  2. The police initiate an investigation. The police request documents that can shed light on the incident, speak with witnesses, suspects, and others who can clarify the matter.

  3. After the investigation is complete, a decision is made regarding prosecution.

If the police investigation leads to a decision to prosecute, the case is transferred to the District Prosecutor.

It is good to know that according to Icelandic law, the police or the prosecuting authority cannot file charges unless there is a greater likelihood than not that the person in question will be convicted—or if special circumstances require an indictment.
