Information for victims

On this page

Practical information for those who have been subjected to an offence, from the time the offence is reported to the police until the case is finally closed.

Reporting offences to the police

Anyone who considers that he has been the victim of a criminal offence, or who considers that he has witnessed or has information on, a criminal act, may contact the police in any part of the country. Most often, the police are contacted by calling 112, especially if the violation has just been committed or is ongoing.

If you go to the Emergency Department, you can also request that the police be called or informed of the violation.

To lodge an appeal

You can also call the police station, send an e-mail or attend the police station to file a complaint.

In the capital area, you can make an appointment to the complaints centre by sending an e-mail to the e-mail address: .

It is important to report the suspected offence to the police first opportunity because it often proves difficult to investigate the offence if it is long between the time it takes for the offence to be charged.

Who can report an offence to the police?

Usually the victim himself or herself files a complaint. In the case of children, the guardians do so, or public bodies, such as child protection. The government may also file charges, and even witnesses.

Emergency responders for victims of sexual violence

The Emergency Response Unit for victims of sexual violence has a multidisciplinary team to deal with victims of sexual violence.

This is where a forensic examination is carried out and samples taken and a report made on the examination which can be called for, if the victim decides to file a complaint.

Forensic examination of the emergency room may be of great significance if the victim decides to file a complaint. The Emergency Department also offers legal advice to the victims of the case.
