A signed application for a specialist licence must be accompanied by:

  • Study record. Confirmation that the applicant has completed a Master's or doctoral programme in the field applied for. A transcript from the relevant university institution must be submitted.

  • Curriculum. If the course names are not representative of the content, submitting a general description of the programme or syllabus is necessary.

  • A specialist project. If this documentation does not clearly indicate that the studies were in the field applied for, the applicant may submit further documentation, such as study essays and descriptions of studies.

  • Final project. The name of the final project is requested, and a brief description of it. It is helpful to have the final project accompanied by an application.

  • A work certificate. Confirmation that the applicant has worked in the field for which approval is requested, as well as the duration and employment ratio. The confirmation must be on the workplace's letterhead and signed by the supervisor/employer. To satisfy the requirement for two years of full-time employment, the applicant may have to submit a certificate from more than one party. In all cases, it is necessary to indicate the applicant's scope of work, job proportion and length of employment.

  • Handle-making. Confirmation that the applicant has received supervision during their term of employment. (This point applies to specialist licences in social work and specialist licences in psychology (50 hours).

A completed and signed application for a licence to practice shall be sent to the Directorate of Health, with certified photocopies of the necessary documentation. A certified photocopy shall mean that the conformity between the original and the photocopy is certified. Documentation can be confirmed from the relevant school (if the study was in Iceland) by the Directorate of Health or the District Commissioner.
