Resources for medicines expenses

Refund for large expenses

Individuals who have suffered from extensive expenses on medical care, medicines or training and are low income can be entitled to a refund of some of the costs at the Social Insurance Administration (TR).

Payment distribution

Individuals who have difficulty paying for medicines due to low income or unexpected costs of medicines can distribute payments.

  • The cost distribution is free to individuals

  • A person makes a contract for payment distribution with a pharmacist

  • The agreement on payment distribution applies to medicinal products that have a payment participation by Iceland Health

  • 2-3 payments can be distributed at the beginning of the 12-month payment period (that is medication costs paid before entering the Iceland Health scheme see Reference amounts: 16,050 ISK for children, young people, elderly and disabled and 24,075 ISK for other health insured persons).

Payments:
  • If the cost exceeds ISK 8,000, you can split the payment into two payments

  • If the cost exceeds ISK 15,000, you can divide the payment into three payments

  • The minimum payment is never less than ISK 4,000
