Each fishing year, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries allocates certain catch quota to support smaller communities:
which are facing difficulties due to downturns in fisheries and which are dependent upon demersal fishing or processing.
which have suffered unexpected cutbacks in the total catch quotas of fishing vessels operating from and landing their catch in the communities in question, which has had a substantial impact on the employment situation in these communities.
Minister sets rules on allocations to municipalities and ships. Municipalities may request special rules regarding allocation and the Minister approves them if there are factual arguments for the changes. The specific regional regulations adopted by the municipalities can be found in the chapter on regional quotas for each fishing year on the website, as applicable.
The Directorate of Fisheries handles the allocation of the regional quota to fishing vessels according to the regulation that applies each fishing year.
