Regional Quota

Application for regional quota

The Directorate of Fisheries advertises applications for regional quota according to regulation on the allocation of regional quotas to fishing vessels in the fishing year 2023/2024.

Guidelines:

- Applications must og through the application system. When signing in one must use social security number and IceKey for the fishing company and all fields must be filled.

- The result of the application will only be published in the applicant's mailbox on island.is
If the applicant wishes to receive a letter by other means, the request must be sent to fiskistofa@fiskistofa.is.

- When applying in a municipality where there is a processing obligation, a contract for the processing of catches must be signed and confirmed by the municipality and submitted as an attachment in the application portal at the same time as the application is made.

Each fishing year, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries allocates certain catch quota to support smaller communities:

  • which are facing difficulties due to downturns in fisheries and which are dependent upon demersal fishing or processing.

  • which have suffered unexpected cutbacks in the total catch quotas of fishing vessels operating from and landing their catch in the communities in question, which has had a substantial impact on the employment situation in these communities.

Minister sets rules on allocations to municipalities and ships. Municipalities may request special rules regarding allocation and the Minister approves them if there are factual arguments for the changes. The specific regional regulations adopted by the municipalities can be found in the chapter on regional quotas for each fishing year on the website, as applicable.

The Directorate of Fisheries handles the allocation of the regional quota to fishing vessels according to the regulation that applies each fishing year.
