Private car rental is a commercial activity where individuals rent out their own registered vehicle, usually for a short period of time, through a rental platform or agency. A permit from the Icelandic Transport Authority (ICETRA) is required for this activity.

Criminal record of the guardian
Professional liability insurance from a recognized insurance company
Estate guardianship certificate of the guardian
A certificate confirming that the applicant’s total debt in public fees and taxes to the Treasury collectors does not exceed ISK 500,000 - No-debt certificate or confirmation from Iceland Revenue and Customs
Confirmation that contributions to a pension fund do not exceed ISK 500,000
If applicant or it´s representative has had a legal domicile registered in another country, a certificate from criminal record from the applicable country/countries has to be turned in with the application
The applicant must have notified the Directorate of Internal Revenue of their business operations. The registered business classification must be appropriately related to the relevant industry.
Processing of applications
ICETRA issues a private car rental permit when all conditions are met.
When a request for documents is not complete or the conditions are not met, ICETRA notifies them by e-mail.
Cost
The cost of car rental permit is in accordance with the tariff of the ICETRA and is 92.576 ISK
Certificates and documents that need to be obtained from other institutions shall be paid for by the applicant.
